Rev250 The Burning of Fairfield 2026

In July 1779, more than two thousand British, Hessian, and Loyalist troops landed on the Connecticut coast under General William Tryon and burned Fairfield to the ground — houses, churches, shops, the public buildings.

The raids were meant to make rebellion expensive. Instead they gave the American cause a grievance it used for the rest of the war — and in Fairfield they made neutrality impossible. Loyalist families had lived here too. Many of them did not stay.

In September 2026, three years ahead of the 250th, the Brigade of the American Revolution came to Fairfield in partnership with the Fairfield Museum & History Center. These photographs are from Saturday September 5th, 2026.
